A. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROGRAMME
The Programme began in October 2015 as a unit of the Department of Mathematics. It is a well-known fact that no industry or establishment can survive without data collection, analysis and management with a view to making decision for the system. Statistics is necessary to facilitate research and development in both small and large scale industries such as banking institutions and financial houses, consultancy (management and engineering) and health sciences.
The programme is oriented towards the teaching of courses in Statistics that will stimulate, improve and promote prudent management of the nation’s economy. The programme is geared towards providing a thorough and broad training in all areas of specialization in Statistics that will ensure efficient management of industry, bank, business, commerce, consultancy (management and engineering) and so on. The enrolment of students into the programme has continued to grow especially at the 100 and 200 levels. The trend is likely to continue in the future particularly because of the expanding services provided by this programme in all fields of human endeavor.
B. PHILOSOPHY, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
PHILOSOPHY
Statistics department will be an academic unit with interests in applications of Statistics to a wide variety of scientific discipline that would be represented in various units in the University and beyond through strong research and training programs covering the breadth and diversity of the subject of Statistics in both theory, methodology and practice.
OBJECTIVES:
The aims and objectives of department of Statistics in the Faculty of Physical Sciences are as follows:

  1. To instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for statistics and involve them in intellectually stimulating studies.
  2. To provide a degree programme that is relevant to research in modern Science and Technology.
  3. To provide relevant service courses to students to enable them apply statistics to problems in Physical and Life Sciences, Engineering, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Medicine, Economics, etc.
  4. To train students, through education in Statistics, a range of transferrable skills of values in Statistics and non-statistics related employment/fields.
  5. To produce graduates in Statistics who will be equipped with good Statistics background from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas of Statistics or multi-disciplinary areas involving Statistics.
  6. To provide a degree option that is relevant to our national needs especially in the area of application to industrial, economic, environmental, education and social planning.
    C. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
    (1) Four-Year Full Time Degree Programme (UTME)
    Candidates seeking admission into this programme should possess any of the following qualifications:
    At least five ordinary Level credit passes in WAEC SSCE/GCE/NECO SSCE/GCE or at least five credit passes in Teachers’ Grade II Certificate Examination (T.C. II) or any of the equivalent recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include, English Language, Mathematics, and at least three Science or Social Sciences Subjects or a combination of Sciences and Social Science subjects.
    The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) subjects are:
    • Use of English
    • Mathematics
    • And any two science or social science subjects or a combination of both.
    (2) Three-Year Full Time Degree Programme (Direct Entry)
    In addition to the UTME requirements above, candidates who possess any of the following qualifications may be considered for admission:
    (i) At least two Advanced Level passes in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) or the Higher School Certificate (HSC) or any of the equivalent recognized by the Senate of the University of Benin at not more than two sittings. The subjects should include Mathematics/Statistics and any other Science or relevant SocialScience (Economics, Accounting, Geography, Business Studies) subjects.
    (ii) At least a merit level pass in the University of Benin Diploma in any of the following:
    a) Data Processing (DDP)
    b) Sciences Laboratory Technology (DSLT)
    c) Analytical and Industrial Chemistry (DAIC)
    d) Mathematics Education (DME)
    e) Computer Engineering (DICE)
    f) Diploma in Geology (DCS)
    g) Computer Science (DCS)
    h) Accounting, Banking and Finance
    i) Diploma in Maritime Studies (DMS)
    j) JUPEB
    (iii) Diploma from other recognized Universities with at least an upper credit level pass in the areas listed in B(ii) above.
    (iv) Ordinary National Diploma (OND) with at least an upper credit level pass in Mathematics/Statistics or Computer Science or Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology.
    (v) Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least a lower credit level pass in Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science or Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) in the relevant area from a recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology
    (vi) Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) with at least a credit level pass in Mathematics and Statistics/Economics/Computer Science/Study from a recognized College of Education. In addition candidates should have at least an overall Credit level pass.
    (vii) A Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree certificate in any of the Sciences or Social Sciences with at least 3rd Class Honours.
